Chugging along my reviews of the 2023 LEGO Super Mario sets, we now take a look at the Lava Wave Ride (71416). This set has 218 pieces and retails for $34.99.

This set is in a castle setting and has items that were originally debuted in Super Mario World including the Lava Lift and the Lava Bubbles. The Lava Lift is a raft of skulls which runs on a curved roller coaster track. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen them as they were in the Thwomp Drop (71376) and that one ran on a straight rail. The skulls do used printed 2×2 round tiles so that’s a plus.

On each end of the track are some Lava Bubbles. The ones found in Super Mario World were the first time they used eyes and were referred to as Lava Bubbles. They are represented here using 2×2 printed tiles.

Off the track, there’s a small path that leads to a Fire Bro. It’s a turtle that has a red shell and helmet and has some Power Blasts for the fireballs.

The LEGO Super Mario Lava Wave Ride (71416) is actually a fun little set that has useful parts that can be used for other builds. Since it’s a castle type set, you’ll most likely need an existing castle layout for it to fit aesthetically. Other than that, I have no qualms about it besides it being a little pricey but that’s for every LEGO Super Mario set.

Thank you to LEGO for sending in this set … Continue
